An Open Letter To General Mohammadu. Buhari
By Ibrahim Ahmed
Ahmadu Bello the Sardauna of Sokoto was the architect of the development of the Northern Nigeria. Together with Zik and Awolowo, they fought for the Independence of Nigeria. He was one of the three selected to represent the North at the drafting committee for the new Macpherson Constitution in 1951.
In 1959 Federal Elections, he led the Northern People’s congress (NPC) to victory in the Federal Parliament in Lagos. He led his party to form an alliance with the National council of Nigerian and Cameroons (NCNC) led by Dr Azikiwe to form the first Nigeria Federal Government in 1960 which obtained independence from our colonial masters, Britain.
Like General Buhari, Ahmadu Bello was very controversial and misunderstood by many Southerners. There were allegations of tribalism labeled against him by the Igbo and Yoruba politicians to ridicule him.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s Southern political opponents and critics of Ahmadu Bello pointed out that he was more interested with protecting Muslims and northern interest than a stronger Nigeria.
His political enemies, like what is happening to you now branded him religious bigot and fundamentalist who was only interested in getting political power to use it to Islamise the country to continue the unfinished task of his Great Grand Father, the first Sultan of Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Danfodio who aimed to reach the Atlantic oil with the Islamisation programme therefore dipping the Quran into the sea. Usman Danfodio led the Islamic Jihad and the Sokoto Caliphate.
Despite Sardauna of Sokoto’s popularity and broad grass root political support that cut across both Muslims and Christians in the Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello chose to remain in the North instead of going to the National parliament in Lagos and insisting to become the Prime Minister of Nigeria as the Leader of the wining party, that formed the first Nigerian Federal Government .
I want General Muhammad Buhari to note that when Sardauna was faced with the same situation the country is currently facing in 1959, and to avoid the divisiveness and polarisation that his insistence of becoming the Chief executive of Nigerian will cause the country he made the sacrificing of choosing to remain in Kaduna as the Premier of Northern Nigeria and gave the position of Prime Minister to his hand-picked candidate, the Late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Ahmadu Bello made this sacrifice because he feared that his insistence of becoming the Prime Minister of Nigeria would polarise the country and cause serious division between the Northern and Southern parts of the country. Remember the fracas that followed after your Presidential candidacy under ANPP and CPC in 2003 and 2011?
You lost not because you were not a good candidate but because the voters in South and West misconstrued you.
Ahmadu Bellow was more popular than you in the North during his life time. But he made sacrifices. He never believed he was the only good and true candidate. Unlike you, even the Northern Christians supported and voted for him and his party in all the pre and post independence elections.
In other words, despite his popularity and grassroots political support among the masses and elites that cut across religious and ethnic divide, Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello chose to remain in the North instead of accepting the post of National Prime Minister which would have caused a lot of resentment and opposition from the southerners which would have polarised the country. We have a similar situation at the moment as you plan to contest against President Goodluck Jonathan.
Sardauna’s personal sacrifice of not insisting in heading the Nigerian national government in 1960 which was a contrast to your position in 2011 and now, showed he was selfless and not selfish. It also showed that he was in politics for the sake of his people and the very sake of unifying the Nigeria and its people.
You can imagine what would have happened in the country if you had stepped down for Nuhu Ribadu and agreed to work with them. Note that ACN in 2011 was supported by the Yorubas. Why must it be only you from the North especially knowing that the west and south may not be disposed to you? Ahmadu Bello backed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and other Federal Parliamentarians in the first republic. Sardauna travelled from village to village to campaign for NPC candidates in both the Federal and regional parliament unlike your current disposition of only after your Presidential ambition, just as you did in 2011 that caused CPC to loose many states to PDP due to internal crises between the Gubernatorial candidates and members of the State and Federal houses. It was your selfishness for not intervening to settle political rivalry among your party’s contestants that cost CPC your state, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi states etc.
Ahmadu Bello worked very hard to modernise and unify the diverse people of Northern Nigeria during his time but you are a sharp contrast.
Ahmadu Bello promoted the legacy of unity among the northerners and Nigerians as a whole. Despite differences in tribes and religious practice, he believed that the things that united us were stronger than the things that divided Nigerians.
Had Ahmadu Bello being alive today he wouls have mobilised the opposition, Labour Unions and civil societies to insist on full implementation of the Justices Kutigi Constitutional Conference recommendations as they affect rotation of Presidents and Governors, among the six Geographical zones and senatorial zones of the country, before 2015 election is conducted.
He would have championed that South-South should be allowed to complete their remaining four years in 201 5 to kick start the new constitution and insist that all the parties including ARC must choose their Presidential candidates from that zone for equity, justice and preservation of national cohesion.
The Nigerian Political Landscape would have been more interested and you would be highly respected in the country if you insisted that your party filled either Governor Rotimi Amaechi or Adams Oshomole, the only two APC Governors from the South-South Geographical zone, to compete against President Jonathan. That would have exposed President Jonathan’s hypocrisy in promoting ethnicity. It would have satisfied the sentiments President Jonathan and his supporters are spreading that North ruled the country for 40years, while the South-south that produces the revenue that the country depends on should be allowed to complete two terms of their first ever reign. .
The insistence of you to rule in spite of your age and many years of Northerners ruling the country is a clear manifestation of tribal arrogance and born to rule syndrome that is treating the future survival of Nigerians.
Ahmadu Bello’s disinclination to head the National Government in view of mistrust by the Southerners in the late 1950’s and 60’s (the problem you are currently facing) confirmed that Sardauna was not interested in power for the sake of power and not a self-centred leader like your actions are portraying. You believe you must be the President of Nigerian regardless of the consequences to the future of the country even if it will spell doom for the most populous black nation on earth in 2015 as predicted by the U.S.A intelligence agency and Political Think Tanks.
General Buharai, His excellency Sir, whether you like it or not, you don’t have national acceptance to withstand POP rigging machine and the response to your defeat in 201 5 by your unruly followers from the Muslims Northern part of the country will be nothing short of disaster and catastrophy to the country. The equally response of the Presidents kinsmen, ex and current militants from the Niger IDelta region who are well oiled and well-armed will be more catastrophic.
The only way to avert this disaster is for you to step down from the Presidential race for the sake of National unity like Ahmadu Bello did more than fifty years ago or the ARC to be more Patriotic and Nationalistic by electing another less controversial candidate that would command national acceptance as their Presidential aspirant. I say this because defeating Buhari will cause crises, since his fanatical supporters would rather die than to see their man lose 201 5 election to President Jonathan.
You must join hand with APC leaders to elect Presidential candidate who can mobilise both Northerners and Southerners, Muslims and Christian to come out of the streets of Lagos, Abuja, kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Port Harcourt and all nooks and corners of Nigeria, like it happened during the subsidy crisis, to protest if POP rigs the election next year. Definitely you don’t have that nation-wide acceptance and capacity to mobilise Nigerians from other parts of the country to march out on the streets.
